Torqueing heads

Attention!!!

If you take the head off a machine, be sure to retorque it after running and getting the engine warm. It is well worth the effort, especially on a diesel.

I decided to do so on my FDE and found most turned anywhere from a 1/4 to 1/2 turn before the wrench clicked.

Hopefully this helps someone decide to do so, or that you need to do so.

I was also taught that if the bolt(s) does not move, loosen it a quarter turn and then tighten. Also make sure you have a film of oil or AntiSeize under the face of the nut.

Thats a good point John.

Something else I thought of today concerning this. The heads on the Hercules diesels have flat washers under the nuts. This is to keep the nut from digging into the head while tightening. I bought what I think were grade 12 washers and nuts for one engine because they were missing when I got it. I don't think you would really need grade 12, but I got a deal on them...
