OC 3 Starter Motor

I'd initially posted this in what appears to be the wrong place, so if it looks as if I'm repeating myself - it's just a "Senior Moment"!

I've recently purchased a 1952 OC 3 -60 with an IXB-3 Engine here in New Zealand and found the Starter Motor to be a little the worse for wear. The Starter has been removed and taken to an Auto Electrical shop for repair and I have been informed that the Armature, which had previously been repaired elsewhere, is shot and needs replacing. Finding one of these in New Zealand is somewhat difficult, the option being an expensive rewire which may (or may not) stand the test of time, so obtaining parts ex-USA seems a better option with an armature being more practical than a complete starter considering the comparative weights and, therefore, freight costs. The ID plate on the Starter is a little defaced, obliterating the Model but it is a 6 Volt Delco Remy device as fitted, as I mentioned above, to an IXB-3 Engine. I would be grateful if anyone could kindly point me in the direction of a reliable source for an armature so I can move my old girl around the property as I can't hand crank due to the fitment of a front mounted Hydraulic tank and pump to operate the blade. The originals on ours were Delco 1109602. Armature is Delco 1888751.

You may get some hits looking for these numbers.

There was also an Autolite starter, but I don't have the number for it. Might have been fitted to the IXK3 on earlier OC3's or Generals. Probably had a bit lower power output, for the lower HP engine.

A couple of possible alternate starters: 1109609 and 1109454. I haven't used either, but they were crossed in some literature. I was told  by an Oliver serviceman there was one with 4 field coils - more powerful - but have no numbers for that one.

I've gone to 12 v. Another knowledgeable tech said the starters lasted longer in 12 v service, because they didn't have to work so hard - as long as the engine starts reliably. Prolonged operation trying to get a balky one going can fry the 6 v units.

I've had some success with London Generator in London Ontario Canada. Got an armature from them must be 20 years ago, and it's still in service.

I've since been in touch with Landis Zimmerman and am going to go with a rebuilt Starter Motor which will leave me with a working crawler and a pile of Starter bits! If I can obtain a spare armature, I will overhaul the old item and hang on to it as a spare - good old Sod's Law dictates that 'when you have back-up, you won't need it". I now know what to look for.

You might try Triodiode on E bay, he's got tons of delco parts & ships many parts for free, got some rebuild parts, for the same starter you have, over the summer. They were original delco factory stuff. Good people to deal with. I've got no affiliation other than being a purchaser.
