The carburetor posted above is a downdraft carb--the M2 installation needs an updraft carb.  It won't work without a lot of modification/fabrication.

The manual should be good for doing engine work.

Embarrassingly, I haven't done anything on my restoration since the last entry on that webpage.  

However, I did just order engine parts from Jerry Biro ( http://www.herculesparts.com/ )--camshaft, connecting rods, and piston rings.  I've previously purchased an engine block, pistons, wrist pins, tappet assemblies, and other assorted parts.  The previous time I ordered, he did not have a carburetor or camshaft, but his inventory changes--as evidenced by the fact that he did have the camshaft this time around.  I've gotten good service out of them.  The only problem I have is that their working hours match mine, so it makes ordering a bit difficult...  

As should be obvious, I'm basically Johnny Cashing an engine from them--one piece at a time.  Unfortunately, it is costing me more than a dime.

Have you tried Zimmerman's for the pump?  I think he's also got the manuals.  There's information posted here for sourcing manuals.

The clutch access is located underneath the gas tank.  The easiest way is probably to remove the hood, fuel tank, and fuel tank support.  Maybe one of the other guys has a better way, but I'm not optimistic.  I don't remember if there's a panel on the underside.

Here's a picture looking forward.  The panel is right in front of the steering levers.

I haven't worked on mine since before Christmas.  The track assemblies bolt to what's termed by the manual as the "support bracket and tube assembly"--one located inboard approximately in line with each bogie cluster.  If you've looked at the picture of my '42 with the engine removed, you can see the forward tube through the exhaust cutout hole on the left hand side of the picture.  As far as the attachment of the tube assemblies to the transmission housing, I'll see what I can do about getting better pictures if someone else doesn't beat me to it.  It may be a couple of weeks, though.

I'm a looong way from needing the windshield knobs, so no rush!  You can plan on signing me up for a set of canvas, as well.  After Christmas is fine, after all, my M2 still looks like this:



I appreciate the extra work you (and your friend) are doing to make these parts available to the rest of us.

Given the relatively high serial number (14JA...) I'm guessing the 44 in the ASC Req. number is 1944, and the 3AF means the tractor was either requisitioned by, or delivered to, the 3rd Air Force.  My 1942 (3JA...) data plate is different, having a delivery date and an Ordnance Department contract number.  I haven't tried to check my later model data plate.

I'll take a set.  Just contact me when you get the price (or post it here) and we can work out the payment details.  You had also mentioned having windscreen locknuts made, but I haven't seen an update recently--or did I miss it somewhere?

I've got the headlight guards--what I will eventually need to replace is the headlamp housing, itself.  But I'm not worried about that, at the moment.

Nice looking P-38.  The use of the light tank to pull it is pretty cool, but you're right, a M2 model would be much nicer.    It would be neat to convert the 2D drawings into a 3D & get a rapid-prototyping outfit to gin up some static models--stereolithograpy, 3D prints, etc.

That's less than I paid for either of mine, but I have too many projects as it is.  The rust doesn't look too bad on that one, but, as you noted, there's significant parts missing.  From the pictures of the engine bay, it looks like the belly pans have been removed.

By the way, Taigh, did you ever locate the roadwheels you were looking for?
