copper ring

I ordered a complete engine gasket set from zimmerman . In the set is a large copper ring 2 3/4" in diameter.
I tore the entire engine down and replaced all the gaskets and seals but never came across this large copper ring.
I was wondering if anyone knows what it is for? I am thinking maybe it was for something that is no longer on  the engine .
The only reason I am asking is curiosity.

The Felpro sets come with gaskets to fit more than one type of Hercules IX motor .
