hello everyone i need some help. i recently was given a 1951 Oliver cletrac model bgsh with a flathead 6cyl which i think is a continental. i went to start and it wouldn't turn which i have had it running before and it ran fine. ( i do have battery power there) so i pulled the starter and noticed it was coated with oil as well as the bolts for it, and i think the oil took out the starter.  do these have a wet starter or am i seeing the affects of an oil leak?  my engine oil hasn't moved since i got it and i hope it isn't the trans.  any information would be appreciated. thanks

The clutch compartment is dry on all Cletracs. It sounds like your drain plug is plugged. Try draining that, and see if its all oil, or has some water with it. Don't think it shoulda took out the starter, but things happen. I'd leave the plug out, and when you get it running again, check the fluids and see where its coming from.

Thanks for the input.  i wasn't sure with some of the newer equipment i worked on had a wet system and the starter had a lot of oil all over the cone.  i did talk to the man who rebuilt it for me and he said oil was the problem and that oil is very bad for any type of electric motor.  i appreciate the input and i'll check the plug after i pick up the starter tomorrow. thanks again

Oh another thing. If its a BGS it should have a JXC or JXD Hercules in it. If its an AG6 it would have a a Continental.

thanks for the engine info. i loosened the drain plug for the trans and only a few drops of water came out then straight oil.  i was looking to drain the flywheel housing but no drain plug or holes of any kind on the bottom of it, any ideas?  i did put a small stick in through the starter hole and there is definately oil in there.  i also noticed there is no seperate housing for the flywheel it goes from trans right to the engine block,  is that normal?  i'm going to try and find a manual do you know who has the best manuals for this machine?  appreciate any help thanks

There should be a drain for the flywheel housing. Its a plug like the rest. Shouldn't be very far from the bellhousing. There should also be a stud and nut in the flywheel housing area. Thats to hold the clutch brake disc.

i found the plug between the trans plug and the clutch brake adjuster.  it was broken off almost flush.  luckily it wasn't siezed and i got it out with a hammer and a chisel.  there was very little oil in there it was mostly water about a gallon.  my uncle saved it from the scrap heap and drained all the fluids and refilled but didn't think to drain the flywheel housing.  thanks for your help i appreciate it.
