Hi, I am new here and am in the process of closing on property that includes an Oliver bgsh serial number 7C678.  It is equipped with a Hercules 6 cyl engine and a PTO winch in the rear.  It also has Issacson Tracdozer on the blade arms, what I am looking for is any information you can help with.  The dozer is located in SW Washington and is red.  I ordered parts and service manuals for the BG hope this was correct. I do have pictures if that will help anyone.  Thanks in advance for the help on this.

The S means your enginr was made by Studebaker, They were licenced by Hercules to build the JXC engine for use in the WWII Studebaker 6 x 6 and sold off surplus production after the war. The H is for Hillside model which is the wide gauge model.

ACCORDING TO CLETRAC'S PUPLICATIONS THE B IS SIZE DESIGNATION, G STANDS FOR GAS POWERED, S STANDS FOR SIX SPEED ( FOUR FORWARD TWO REVERSE) AND H STANDS FOR HILL SIDE VERSION. NEVER HERD OF STUDEBAKER MAKING A HERC ENGINE.

Yes. The S designates the engine was made by Studebaker.

O. K. I want some one to explain to me why after the war there were no BG models, They are all BGS and if you look there are two seperate parts books, one for the BG one for the BGS

BTW, my B dozer is a BGSH, but it has an MG-1 engine in it!

I don't really know what the "S" stands for except I read in one of Blake's comments some time ago that it stood for Studebaker and the facts that I know seem to support that.  First I have only seen the "S" used in B model descriptions.
Second the B models uses the same JXD engine as used in the Studebaker 6X6 truck of WW II.  Third the B and D models both started out with four speed transmissions and were changed to six speeds but I have never seen an "S" used in reference to a D model.  This of course does not mean that some other explanation is wrong!!

Hi Robert there is a very good reason why you have not seen the D and FD models with the s in the model number. and that reason is because i was wrong! When looking at some info. i have the sheet lists the FD,DG,DD,BD and BG then had a s after each at the botton of the page it tells you that the s ment six speed.However upon further opservation i also noticed that the bgs was also listed with the same small s out to the side as the rest. So does the s mean studebaker? Could be however after talking with a man who worked for herc. at that time i did find out that studebaker only bought the jxd and finished hanging accessories, oil pan and other outward componets. they did apparently have a quantity of these engines left after the war. Oh well i have been collecting Cletracs for 18 years now and i still like them very much. I'll keep reading about them and working on them and maybe as i go i may even learn something! Thanks guys.

Tim Do you have in print this Cletrac information of the model identification. I am not doubting you at all, but I would like to have a copy for my collection. It is like the little general thing. Does the size of the serial number tag have any meaning as to who sold the tractor? Cletrac, The Coop's Massey B. F. Avery?

Hi John i tried to take a picture of that sheet but my camera is not very good and it was unreadable. At some piont I am going to get a scaner and then I will get it to you.
