I got a my lil hg a few weeks ago and the starter is toast to say the least.  To have a it a rewound its gonna be a $200, but I hear the stock starter is to small.

Are these 2 starters the same?

I really dont feel like spending money on this crawler yet. It does need a engine rebuild and the rear axle mounted more solidly. I'll more then likely fix most of it and off this oliver and buy a  lot nicer one.

What exactly is wrong with the starter you have? You can purchase brush kits and renew the bearings pretty inexpensively if that's all it needs. Did any smoke get out?

Crazy Matt

It was about smoked when it got it.

It needs to be rewound. $200 was the lowest price/ good guy deal I found.  So might was well put a better starter in.

I would just have the starter rebuilt with a new armature. I think mine got a new armature, fields, brushes, bearings, etc and was only maybe $150. I don't remember for sure, but I think that is right. It also has to do with being in Kansas. That will vary by state and town.

I don't have any problems with the original starter, especially with a good size 12V battery in it.   I just don't crank very long before I let the starter cool.

I went and fixed the starter. Real good one might say. It cost $500 for a used reman or rebuild. Works pretty well and doesnt get hot.

Its also in the form of another HG42 tho....     This one runs really well, but is hard starting.  I still have yet to go get it and bring it home to play with it.
