As you well know,  the flywheel on a HG can be installed in the incorrect position to the #1 TDC.  And that is exactly what has evidently happened to mine.  Instead of tearing it completly down to fix it...I have decided to try it another way.  Lots of help so far from indivules but the imformation has not worked so far.  Not too many people around still that are really familiar with Mags.
I pulled the mag off to work on the points before I noticed that the flywheel marks did not line up so...I aligned the cam and crank gears to the timing marks then the cam gear to the #3  mark on the governor gear,  brought the #1 piston up to TDC,  then rotated the impulse coupler backward from normal rotation until the rotor timming mark was on #1 on the cap..hooked it all back up and all I get is a backfire through one of the exhaust valves???? What am I doing wrong?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.....Thanks ...Dennis

Just pull the plugs, stick your thumb on the sparkplug hole, make sure the right plug fires when your thumb pops off.  Simple, but it eliminates a lot of head scratching.

How many different ways can that flywheel go onto the crankshaft?

the flywheel can be installed in two positions the bolt circle on the crank has two dowel pins ,so it can be installed correct or 180 degrees out for timing purposes.                                walter

what type of mag do you have ?if it is a wico xh with the sight window you could have the rotor out of time ,if so there is a raised line on the rotor and an arrow on the gear that it meshes with . if you are timing the mag by the service manual method the line on the flywheel is the spark mark which is 14degrees or 1 5/16" before top dead center.

I guess one could time the engine using #2 cylinder, instead of #1 as the mark should be correct for #2 coming up on TDC.
