Throttle lever mounting position on a General

I've seen photos of several Generals with the throttle lever mounted by the right footrest. Mine is welded to the bearing cap beside the shift lever. I thought it was wrong, but I found some photos on the B.F. Avery website that show one mounted just like mine, and when I cleaned the grime off mine I can see remnants of orange paint on the weld, and no trace of it ever being mounted anywhere else. Were they mounted in different spots in different years?

the early cletrac generals had the throttle on a small three bolt cap like you are describing ,the two caps on top of the trans. case were actually to adjust the steering bands on hg crawlers since they used the same trans. case .i believe this type of trans. case was only used in the first part of the first year of production then they changed the steering band setup to be adjusted external from the rear of the case .

That describes mine perfectly! Does that mean it is one of the early ones? The i.d. plate is gone, but I was told it was a '39 model. Thanks a lot for the info! Rick.

Look on the left side of the engine block near the top of the block. There is a flat spot there that has the engine model and engine serial number. Post that and hope that it has the original engine in it.  Other Questions send me a personal message

The i.d. plate behind the carb & the pad on the left side both say it's an IXA3 motor, but while the i.d. plate says 1265722 the block appears to be stamped L265722. Judging by the various layers of paint it appears to be the original motor.

IXA is the correct engine for an early general ,with that type trans. case it should be a 39 model. the tractor id plate should be on the rear end of the right side frame rail.according to my info ser.#1fa000-3fa935 are the early type 39's,i have one of the first couple of hundred made that i am presently restoring.

Walter,I found the rivets where the tag SHOULD be, but it's long gone! From all I've learned it probably is a '39. It is not equipped for a starter, either. And driving without footbrakes takes some getting use to,too! I'm having a ball with it. I hope to get it show-ready by spring, so I can display it with our 2 Centaurs. Where in Tn. are you? We've been to the Eagleville & Lawrenceburg shows. We're 25 miles south of Birmingham. Rick

Double check that engine number again. According to my General parts book the IXA engine numbers start with the number six. Also if you do not have one reprinted parts books are available from the museum in Charles City. Also I had a man posst a form on here a few years a go that said the 39 model HG tractors had the serial number also stamped in the frame. Maybe they did this with the General also. John

I'm afraid that's the numbers I got. Other than the first digit being different both sides are clearly marked with the same number. As for the frame number I have gone over both rails with a magnifying glass and find nothing but the rivets on the back of the right rail. I thought they only started stamping numbers on the rail after B.F. Avery started building them?
