Wow! That looks like what actually was done or maybe they are just using the external coil to by-pass the internal coil because they are expensive to replace??. How come I can't see the plug wires on the cap?

Jethrow

Very creative!  What's the plan for replacement?  Are you considering the Farmall H distributor as a candidate?  If so, take some pictures. I'm considering the same if my Mag ever fails.  Seems like the Farmall H distributor would add some flexibility in terms of 6V or 12V and coil options.

I already took  the spark plug leads off - one was all frayed and probably shorting out on the head. I never had it running in this condition. The reseller guy said he couldn't start it! No kidding!
I am just putting a rebuilt Wico on it. Everything engine-wise looks nice and clean. Rad is spotless which is a relief. I bet it fires up just peachy. I will know tomorrow.
The air cleaner had an full inch of black sludge in it and was way overfilled with oil. Cleaned up nice in Kerosene. The machine was used on the onion and potato black 'muck' fields. Very dusty, but easy on grousers  :)
The generator is much too big (looks like its off a 550 Oliver on rubber) so that was why the oil filter was moved and welded to the frame.
Incidentally those tracks, each and every pad, were cut down to 6 in. with a torch from 10 inch tracks  :o
Nice quality work (I am betting the owner didn't do it to judge by his other ugly welding), but surely incredibly time-consuming!

I've seen some  "nonsense".   One guy  had  a Farmall  similar to our old  "Regular"  with a V8  dist.  coupled to the mag drive with a hose  and clamps  "coupler."    At the time,  I didn't think to ask him  "what about the sparks from the open  plug towers?"
You cannot break it if it's broken,  but....
You can fix it so it cannot be fixed!!
