Just got a 1947 Cletrac HG42. After some fiddling with the throttle linkage, carburetor (Tilotson), new spark plugs, wires, and lubing everything, it starts right up and runs pretty good. Oil pressure is a constant 20 psi, there's no smoke, and it drives well (other than the sticking clutch).
Only real concern is the rear main seal. Oil just pours out... so much in fact that it gets slung out the inspection hole on the upper side of the engine block. There's no plug screwed in, so I have to locate one.
If I pull off the pan, can the rear seal be replaced?
The clutch is obviously soaked with oil, so it will need to be replaced also. I've got a shop manual in the mail, and it doesn't look to tough to change the clutch.
Can you recommend a parts supplier for the 1XK3 motor?
Thanks in advance-
Mike

Too get to the rear seal you need to pull the clutch then the flywheel.  The seal seals to the back side of the flywheel. Zimmerman's will have the seal and anything else you need for that engine.

I've had clutches soaked in oil before and, if they are not worn out, you can usually save them by cleaning in gasoline and then brake cleaner.

Check Jerry Biro's link under parts on this site. He sells Hercules parts.

Spoke to Landis Zimmerman and ordered a new clutch, rear main seal, and pan gasket kit. He certainly has a wealth of information and we are lucky to have a source like this .... professional, courteous and willing to help.
Thanks for the tip. I'll post some pictures when I get into the repairs.

I'll second the comments re the Zimmerman operation.

And his prices are very reasonable. My last contact - for some roller axles - their price was a quarter of OEM.
I had geared up with a length of steel rod stock to turn out my own; his price was so reasonable that the rod stock is rusting out behind the shop!
