24 volt starter ???

i was just browsing the pages and one of the posts commented on a 24 volt starter.  i have a 24 volt generator that i am taking off the new engine because the dozer is set up for 12 volts. the motor also came with a starter on it. is this starter supposed to be changed for a 12 volt system ??
