trailering an oc-46

this is a question for those who have some experience with hauling an oc-46.what kind of rig is adequate? if the axle rating is over 8000 lbs can an average 4wd 1/2 ton handle it?any thoughts appreciated.

If you don't have far to go and you have trailer brakes, a half ton is probably a minumum. Personally I don't like trailering that much weight with anything less than a 3/4 ton pick-up. The brakes on a half ton P/U usually aren't much bigger than a full size cars brakes. As a rule of thumb for control purposes the tow vehicles weight should be at a minumum 60% of the trailered weight. The trailer alone is going to weight around 2000 lbs. I imagine and OC-46 is going to add close to 5000 lb to the trailer wieght. Be cautious.

The OC 46 is about 7000 pounds, any trailer that can handle that will at least 3,000, so that makes 10,000 behind a truck that is about 4200 empty.  You would be ok if is not far to go and is all on the level.  A little bit up hill would be ok, it is going down hill that will  get you into trouble.
I would be looking for a 1 ton!!

I would say a 3/4 ton truck and a 10000 gvw trailer would be a stretching it for an OC46 with loader and counter weights. I hauled mine home minus the loader and weights on a 7000 lb trailer behind a 1/2 ton. I was glad I didn't have to go more than13 miles with it.

I trailered my OC4 on a five hour trip from Massachusetts to Central Jersey.  I used a 1998 GMC Ã,¾ ton truck with Towing Transition on a 10MB Trailer I rented from RYDER.  The trailer had surge brakes.  I had no problem at all.  I estimate the trailer was at the maximum 10MB weight loaded.   Trailer Brakes are a MUST. Secure the load well, drive a few miles, stop and re-tighted you load binders. Keep Right, maintain double distance between you and the vehicle ahead, Stay under the speed limit and anticipate the road ahead.
