oil pump on an OC-3

I would like some input about the oil pump on my OC-3. I am putting the motor back together and was wondering if on a complete rebuild I need to do anything to the oil pump. the original has a broken gear and the replacement seems have less resistance when i turn it. the motor I took it out of is on its second rebuild.
 any input will be appreciated.

Put it some parts washer fluid and spin by hand . If it will pump that you should be OK .
