oil filter

I have a dumb question, on my OC-3 when I took the oil filter off (wix 51101) there was a wood dowel sharpened like a pencil in the center, I pulled it out and cranked the motor and oil came out of the hole, so I checked two more motors and one was just a hole, and one had a short piece of tubing sticking up. So what should be there? I seams like the oil needs to get to the top of the filter first. any insight will help. I am thinking of just a short piece of tubing, but not sure if I need to drill some holes in the sideand cap the top?

Short Tubing. I need to think, but on the wheel tractors there is also a restictor disk behind the tube and if you loose it your oil pressure drops. It is what causes the resistance to flow and therefore oil pressure to a certain extent.

You need that pipe so it transport the oil
to the top of filter and could run down
thru the filter
otherwise the oil wont be cleaned.
it wont pass thru the filter.

And there is only one hole at the end of the pipe(sharpend end)

I knew it wasn't right, I added a piece of tubing with just the hole in the end.

I called Wix and talked to a Tek he was well versed on this filter, he could not locate the print for the filter holder but said the tube went to within an inch of the top of the filter, also he told me that Wix has changed the design of the 51101 to have a pleated paper filter with a rubber boot to go over the tube.
