I cant find the tag on my hg. Its not on the bell like the 49 is.

If that's the block casting number, Zimmerman's can tell you the date.
Alternatively, look for the casting date on the block behind where the mag is. You can usually shine a torch in there if the mag is still on and read it. I am told the machine left the factory about six months after that casting date. I read somewhere that some dipsticks also have a date - on the stem not the cap.

Did you look on the frame? The earlier HG had a tag on the right side of the frame just in front of thr final drive. I am not sure what year they went to the bell housing. I have a picture of a 1946 that has the tag on the frame.
