Did you take the pistons out or just clean up the part of the cylinder above them??   When the inside is that dirty most likely your rings are all stuck and that is why you have poor compression.  Crack in cylinder due to water freezing inside the cylinder!!
Yes the diesel is a desirable engine.  There are two models early one with small crank and later with large crank.  Those above sn 3601482 have the large crank, all were sleeved.
