HG final drive

Let me start with a big thank you Blake for this web site.  I just purchased a 1945 HG that to my unexperienced eye is in good shape. My problem is that when the right drive sprocket rotates to the same spot it disengages as if there might be a missing tooth on the ring gear. The nuts on the studs under the cover were loose and one is missing. I am ordering a service manual today  but would apreciate some feedback.  Once again thank you Blake and the rest of this forum, this is my first tractor and a large part of why I purchased this HG is because of this web site.

Just me again. I tried to call Zimerman at 717-738-2573, Jensales at 800-443-0625 and Floyd County Historic Soc. at 614-228-1099, no answer at two #s and  disconected at Jensales. I'm going to try again but if someone has better phone numbers please respond. Thanks Bill

Well I was able to order a service manual through Zimerman this afternoon so deleate the previous mesage if you like, thanks again for the site.  Bill:)

HI JUST THOUGHT I WOULD GIVE YOU A LITTLE INFO ON THE HG TRACTORS. THE FINAL DRIVE IN THE LATER TRACTORS WERE CHANGE FROM A BALL BEARING AT THE PINION GEAR TO A TAPERED ONE DUE TO THE REPEATED FAILURE OF THE BALL BEARING. IT WOULD LOSE THE BALLS AND THEY FELL INTO THE BULL GEAR AND GOT ROTATED THREW THE TWO GEARS CAUSING TOOTH DAMAGE. THIS IS A FAILY COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE EARLIER HG. IF YOU NEED ANY FURTHER INFO. PLEASE FEEL FREE TO CONTACT ME I HAVE ALL THE SERVICE PARTS AND MATENANCE MANUALS ON THE HG OC3 THANKS HOPE THIS HELPS

Thanks for the response Tim ,got the track off this evening wont know for sure what the problem is untill I get the final drive apart. If it is the ring gear zimerman sais they will have one but need to know the number of teeth. Price is more than I would like to spend  but less than I was afraid of .Again thanks for the response I'll keep you posted on my progress and give you a call)

Tim as you thought the ball bearings that suport the pinion were bad, no missing balls however. I think the bearings must have alowed the pinion to ride up and bind on the ring gear.Can't wait to get this thing up and runing ,other than unloading it from the trailer and driving into my shop I have never driven a track layer)
