I'll be picking up the new valves, guides, springs, and gaskets over the weekend.  When I start going back together with it, what is the proper head bolt torque and valve lash adjustment?  Hercules GO130 gas.  TIA!!

My gramps Howard van Driest was Experimental Engineer at Cletrac and Oliver Corporation. After the plant closed, he and my uncle started an excavating business, initially using Cletrac and Oliver Crawler tractors. That's a good question Blake.  I always adjust valves in my wheel tractors cold, so I didn't even think to ask.  Thanks for asking!!

A lot of engines give their clearances as hot. 0.010" just seems a little tight for an overhead valve engine when set cold as you will have lineal expansion of the pushrod. Maybe I am wrong and it is cold, but I just thought one should double check.

Hey Oliverchris--Is that valve lash hot or cold, and does the rear head bolt (drilled) get torqued to 140 also.  I have snapped a drilled one on one of my Oliver wheel tractors once.  It wasn't too big a deal as it was a bolt and a long nail fit down in it tight and turned the broken threads out.  This one being a stud wouldn't be so simple if it breaks!

0.012 cold — 0.010 hot after final cylinder head bolt torque to 140ft.lbs  (that is after engine is brought up to operating temperature, remove rocker assembly again, re-torque, then back to operating temp., then re-check/set valve gap). That drilled stud is same torque according to shop manual.

Some of Chris' posts are coming up blank to me. Anyone else having that problem? The text is actually there, but not showing up. When I reply with quote it comes up. Below is his post:

Trying again:
