I have not posted for a while but I am still here. I seem to be having porblems with my Marvel Schebler. The engine will lose power and almost stall when a load is put on it. I went through the carb and no help. The nozzle tube that is at the venture was bent so I went looking for one. My local garage that has been around for a while managed to straighten it but says that my venture looks to small for a 4 clyinder, looks more like a carb from a two clyinder power unit. The numbers on the brass tag are 59TSX3. Is this the correct carb for my IXB3 . Would any one have a parts carb with a good venture? I can choke it down and it runs great, I don't think this is the way to run it. Thanks

Alan,

I'm not sure what you have, but they do look rather small for the size of engine. According to my Gramps, the smaller venture was to increase the engine's torque at lower rpms. You'd have a lot more velocity going through that carb than you would with a larger one.

Blake, Thanks for the reply. Like I said, if I choke it down about half, it runs fine. I don't have an air cleaner on it, could this be part of the problem as I think that would also make the carb work better. I always hear that you should make adjustments with the air cleaner in place. I would like to find the correct air cleaner. Any body have one for sale??

always make all carb adjustments with the engine warm and the air breather connected. connecting the breather will richen the mixture .

Although it is not good to run it without an air cleaner, it should run just fine without it. The air cleaner should not make any restriction to the air flow.

I had the same problems with my carburetor.  I had a new main tube made by Robert's Carburetor Shop and sealed the venturi with non-hardening Aviation Permatex.

The vent for the carburetor surrounds the venturi, so if it is not sealed, it makes for a large vacuum leak, but will run with the choke half closed.

Udate on my carb problems. My local parts / mechanic fellow who thought I had to small a venture for a four clyinder engine called a friend of his who knows carbs. He gave him the number on the bottom of the venture and he says " you have the right venture for that engine and the carb is a TSK403. After looking at the carb I could see the 403. He then told me to pull out the main power tube that screws on top of the jet and drill the three holes in the tube wall 2 number drill sizes larger. I did this and now the thing runs with the choke wide open and has lots of rev. He said it was just worn out from years of air passing through.
