i am just getting into the start of looking for a JD or Cletrac crawler.  I was wondering what is the preference between the 2 and is there a particular part of the country the cletrac are more easily found?  i am in South Carolina.

I plan on using the crawler to pull small trees out of the woods, and just to tool around in the woods and climb hills.

Well Cletracs are far more technologically advanced, better and stronger built and more enjoyable to run than John Deere crawlers. JD did come out with some pretty nice machines toward the end of the 1960s, but before that they were quite delicate and primitive.

Cletracs are also much safer on hills than the clutch-steered machines.

My gramps Howard van Driest was Experimental Engineer at Cletrac and Oliver Corporation. After the plant closed, he and my uncle started an excavating business, initially using Cletrac and Oliver Crawler tractors. I seem to see more of them coming from the eastern US for some reason but there is always at least one or two listed on craiglist in my area every week.
