Iââ,¬â,,¢ve been thinking it would be nice to have more power to move dirt with the loader and I have an extra Hercules D198ER sitting around gathering dust. I did some measuring and it looks like it will fit the HG if mounted right above the frame rails and the radiator moved forward a few inches. Or maybe the IXK flywheel & bell housing could be adapted to the D198?

The big question is whether the HG trans, differential and final drive would handle the extra power. The D198 has about twice the rating (50HP & 150lbs torque) than the little Herc IXK3 thatââ,¬â,,¢s in it now. Any comments appreciated,

Thanks

I have it somewhere but that Clark transmission is rated for 70 foot pounds of torque. All transmissions and gear boxes are rated in pound feet or torque not horsepower. Questions. By the way the insides of that ER Hercules are not the same as a civilian Hercules.

Thanks John, I suspected that was the case and 150 lbs of torque would be too much. I guess if I need more dirt moved I better just hire someone with a bigger tractor! I was aware that the D198ER model used the Roosa pump in place of the Bosch, but was not aware of any internal differences. I overhauled it several years ago and got the parts (rings, brgs, gaskets) from Bay Engine in SF and as I recall the catalogue had same part numbers as the civilian D2000.

Thanks,

John

I have an HG-68 with an Oliver 77 engine in it. I don't know what the torque of that engine is, but the tractor held up good.

This was the tractor used in the development of the OC-6. My grandfather used it for plowing and other uses around the farm after he bought it from the Cleveland plant. It was never used for loader or dozer work, so I don't know what it would do in that application.

My gramps Howard van Driest was Experimental Engineer at Cletrac and Oliver Corporation. After the plant closed, he and my uncle started an excavating business, initially using Cletrac and Oliver Crawler tractors. Hi Blake,

Thanks for the info. I think I'll just leave it "as is" for now rather than try to make it do the work of a bigger machine. The big problem of fitting the D198 is the width of the SAE #3 bellhousing and if I mounted the engine above the frame rails the driveshaft angle would be pretty steep.

Thanks,

John

My HG68 came with a Rambler 230 ci 6 cyl engine with a conventional 3 speed trans in front of the stock  trans/diffl. It ran fine with no drive problems for 20 years - then the engine just wore out and I replaced it with an 82 Datsun with a 5 spd. It has since become a project to convert it to an HG42.
