In order to replace the track roller bushings and clean out the roller cavity there are snap rings that must be removed. I've pried them out using screwdrivers but it occurs to me there must be a better way. Is there a special tool or anyone have any tips?

i know the trouble you are having, a lot of times the lock ring is rusted into the grove making the removal a difficult task.i usually take a punch and lightly tap around the ring to help break it loose then use a small screw driver and some picks to work it out of the groove.
