Jeeez.. could they have designed these any harder to get out?

I tried heating, penetrating oil, then a pair of vise grips on the part thats remaining (yes, it partially rusted away... probably why its so darn hard to remove)

ANy ideas short of cutting thru the cap and destroying both it and the cross joint?

try using a die grinder with new thin blade, cut down into cap at 90 degree angle, being careful only to go just below depth of clip this will allow use of a pic or pointed awl to get under clip to remove pieces, also would permit removal of new clips later. used this method on several when installing model a trans setup in my oc3.

thanks... I did "sorta" the same thing...using a cutting wheel, I nearly cut the old cap in half, allowing me to "spin" it around a bit with a chicel and hammer moving the clip into view as well

It's amazing what you can do with a thin cut off wheel. I have removed broken off bolts by cutting a slot in the remaining bolt and using a screwdriver to remove the broken portion of bolt. I wonder what we did before we had cut off wheels. Sure beats using a hacksaw.
