All of the pictures of HG-s and oc-3's I have seen, the ends (handles) of the friction levers are bent horizontally. The friction lever handles on my HG-42 are veritical (no bend). What gives?

Are you talking about the steering levers? I have seen them both ways. Some have a bend in the vertical levers to bring the handles further apart.
My gramps Howard van Driest was Experimental Engineer at Cletrac and Oliver Corporation. After the plant closed, he and my uncle started an excavating business, initially using Cletrac and Oliver Crawler tractors. Great site!

I'm gessing it must have been an option. Ergonomics 50 years ahead of it's time!
