Very Sluggish Starter on OC-46 Diesel

I tried starting my machine the other day to get the water out of the bucket and I could barely get it to turn over.   I had started it in the early spring but it has been sitting outside idle since then.   The motor will turn over very slowly but that is it.   I tried jump starting it and even hooked my truck battery directly to the starter and a nearby ground and it did the same thing so I think I've ruled out bad wiring.    Is there a failure mode of these starters that gives this type of symptom.   Luckily the starter is one of the few things on the engine that I think I can remove with the endloader in the down position.

Should I get a local rebuild it or send it to a specialty shop like Zimmerman?

If the internal wiring on the starter is not perfect you can get this symptom. I had one on an OC3 like that. I checked wiring thinking I had a short or a loose connection, cleaned up all starter button connections, cable ends and battery terminals etc. The second I swapped it out for a rebuilt starter, it was fine. Any auto-electric shop can rebuild these starters. Some will even change them from 6volts to 12volts. Mind you saying that some OC46 diesels were originally 12 volts, weren't they?

I would take it off and check it first. It could be that the only problem is the bushings are bone dry and a bit of oil will fix it. I've had that happen.

I have a '52 AD Diesel, starter having trouble turning over after recharging battery after excessive cranking running out of fuel. I have rebuilt starter, changed battery...still struggling to turn (slowly). Is there a specific solenoid I need to use or size cables to starter and from battery? I've bought the heavies cable from Tractor and Supp. but they still heat up after cranking. Any suggestions? I'm lost beyond words...frustrated more like it.
