Thinking out loud...

So I have been thinking. I have access to a good sized lathe. I am missing the belt pulley for my HG-42. I watched an 18 inch diameter pulley being built from scratch so I know the proccess. Could I do this myself to build one for my HG-42?

Well, I believe I can do it with some practice. So I got to wondering if anyone else was missing a pulley and would possibly need one.

They wouldn't be exactly as original and they would be all steel.

Like I said kinda just thinking out loud.

No reason you couldn't make one, though you may want to look around first as they are quite common. If you find one, you may have to modify it for your HG.

One thing to be aware of if you decide to make one - belt pulleys are crowned and not flat. The belt will try to stay on the highest part of the crown and will therefore not try to walk off. If you make it flat the belt will not stay on.

Pulleys for HGs are rare as a stand-alone item. I almost never see one for sale separately. PTO units are reasonably easy to locate. About half of those I get have no pulley. That company in Tennessee that refurbishes them do not sell the pulleys separately.
So yes, I reckon you could sell a few!

I am pretty close to making a prototype for the belt pulley, I need to begin collecting materials. Does anyone happen to know the dimensions of the pulley? The paperpulleys site shows 8 1/2 x 6 1/2. I wanted to confirm this number.

Something you might want to check out and consider. I don't know anything about Cletrac pulleys, but some are not actually "flat" but rather convex a very slight amount, which promotes keeping the belt centered.

All flat belt pulleys are crowned. Otherwise the belt would walk off. I have seen some amazingly out of line belt lining up jobs and, much to my surprise, the belt stayed on just fine.

Quick update, I have machined 2 hubs that are fitting the tapered shaft perfectly. I am still looking around for materials. Doesn't seem too easy to find steel on the cheap anymore.
